What is a LEI code?

LEI stands for Legal Entity Identifier. It is an internationally standardised code that was created in the wake of the financial crisis to make financial markets more transparent and secure. With this identification number - unique for every legal entity - transactions can be easily traced anywhere in the world.

When is a LEI code mandatory?

All companies trading in financial products are required to apply for a LEI code. Do you want to invest through your company? If so, you must mention your LEI code every time you buy or sell exchange products (for example, shares, bonds, warrants and government bonds). 
NB: A LEI code is not mandatory for private individuals and one-man businesses (natural persons).

How can you apply for a LEI code?

A LEI code is not automatically assigned. As soon as you take steps to deal with the stock exchange, you must apply for your code yourself, and renew it annually. Filing out a new application is easy online through icounter.
